Prevention of Recurrent Nephrolithiasis in Adults and Children: A Systematic Review
Dr. Lusk is part of a team that has published “Prevention of Recurrent Nephrolithiasis in Adults and Children: A Systematic Review” on Annals of Internal Medicine. This systematic review of 31 studies found that, in adults with calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate kidney stones, increased fluid intake, a normal-to-high calcium, low-protein, low-sodium diet, thiazide diuretics, alkali therapy, and allopurinol may reduce stone recurrence. Evidence for other interventions was limited. No studies evaluated surveillance imaging. Benefits in children and long-term harms remain uncertain, although serious adverse events were uncommon.
