A cross-sectional analysis of disparities in neighborhood physical activity environments across the urban–rural Spectrum in the contiguous United States
Dr. Wen is part of a team that has published “A cross-sectional analysis of disparities in neighborhood physical activity environments across the urban–rural Spectrum in the contiguous United States” on Preventive Medicine. This study examined racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in neighborhood physical activity environments (PAEs) across U.S. census tracts. Results showed that predominantly non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic neighborhoods had lower land-use mix, fewer fitness centers, less green space, and higher pollution than non-Hispanic White neighborhoods. High-poverty tracts also had fewer recreational resources, less green space, and lower civic engagement, despite higher road and intersection density. Disparities were generally larger in urban and suburban areas. View Publication:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ypmed.2026.108539
