Dr. Kingston is a part of the team that has recently published “Exploring the relationship between cognitive impairment, frailty and mortality in the oldest old: findings from the Newcastle 85+ cohort study” on Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Using data from 695 adults aged 85 years in the Newcastle 85+ Study, this longitudinal analysis found that frailty accelerated cognitive decline and, when combined with cognitive impairment, markedly increased mortality risk. Participants with both conditions had the highest mortality (HR 3.67), a 28% lower 10-year survival probability, and lost approximately two years of restricted mean survival. The findings support integrated interventions targeting both physical frailty and cognitive health.
