Association of depressive symptomatology with healthcare utilization among community-dwelling older adults:
an electronic medical records-based longitudinal study in Singapore
Dr. Visaria and Dr. Malhotra are part of a team that has published “Association of depressive symptomatology with healthcare utilization among community-dwelling older adults: an electronic medical records-based longitudinal study in Singapore” in Aging & mental health. This study of community-dwelling older adults in Singapore found that depressive symptoms were strongly associated with greater healthcare utilization. Using longitudinal survey and electronic medical record data from 4,049 participants, researchers showed that higher depressive symptom scores increased the likelihood of emergency department visits, frequent ED use, and hospitalizations within 12 months. Each unit increase in depressive symptoms raised odds of ED visits by 5% and hospitalizations by 6%. Findings emphasize the importance of early depression identification and treatment to reduce healthcare burden among older adults.View Publication: https://doi.org/10.1080/13607863.2026.2639631
