Heterogeneous Impairment Patterns among Midlife Latinos in the United States
Dr. Garcia is part of a team that has published “Heterogeneous Impairment Patterns among Midlife Latinos in the United States” on The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences. Using American Community Survey data (2008–2019), this study examines impairment among U.S. Latinos aged 45–64, emphasizing subgroup differences. Results reveal major heterogeneity: Puerto Rican, Black, multiracial, American Indian, and Alaska Native Latinos face especially high impairment risks. U.S.-born Latinos, childhood migrants, and long-term residents also show elevated probabilities. The findings demonstrate that treating Latinos as a single pan-ethnic group obscures important disparities, limiting effective health policy and intervention efforts.
