Heterogeneity in healthy aging among U.S. Latinos: a dual functionality perspective,
Dr. Garcia is part of a team that has published “Heterogeneity in healthy aging among U.S. Latinos: a dual functionality perspective,” on The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences. Using 16 years of American Community Survey data, this study examined healthy aging among U.S. Latinos using “dual functionality,” defined as freedom from both cognitive and physical limitations. Functional health declined with age, but disparities varied by heritage, nativity, and sex. South Americans showed the strongest outcomes, while island-born Puerto Ricans consistently experienced the poorest. Foreign-born Latinos generally had better functional health than U.S.-born peers, though this advantage weakened with age, especially among women. Findings highlight persistent structural inequalities shaping aging outcomes. View Publication:https://doi.org/10.1093/geronb/gbag039
