The Worst Tie Matters: Intergenerational Relationship Trajectories in
Multi-Child Families and Depressive Symptoms of Older Parents in China
Dr. Zang is a part of the team that has published “The Worst Tie Matters: Intergenerational Relationship Trajectories in Multi-Child Families and Depressive Symptoms of Older Parents in China” on The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences. Using data from 3,519 older adults in China followed from 2014–2020, this study found that improving parent–child relationships were associated with fewer depressive symptoms in later life. Among families with multiple children, the quality of the most strained relationship was the strongest predictor of mental health. These effects were most pronounced among older adults with lower socioeconomic status, suggesting that repairing difficult family relationships may be particularly important for vulnerable populations.
