Uncertainty and unmet needs in older high-risk blunt trauma survivors and their caregivers: a multi-centre mixed methods study
Dr. Malhotra is a part of the team that has published “Uncertainty and unmet needs in older high-risk blunt trauma survivors and their caregivers: a multi-centre mixed methods study” on Scientific Reports. This mixed-methods longitudinal study examined the experiences of older high-risk blunt trauma survivors and their caregivers after hospital discharge. Among 155 patients, unplanned readmissions and mortality were common. Interviews identified key unmet needs, including uncertainty about prognosis, financial challenges, unmet social needs, inconsistent healthcare access, and inadequate support systems. Patients with frequent readmissions, greater comorbidity, or poorer functioning reported lower quality of life, while caregivers experienced increasing financial strain. The findings highlight the need for coordinated post-discharge support and early identification of at-risk patients to improve long-term outcomes and reduce uncertainty.View Publication: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-47587-3
