Subjective masticatory function and healthy life expectancy among older adults in Singapore: a multistate life table analysis
Dr. Malhotra is part of the team that has published “Subjective masticatory function and healthy life expectancy among older adults in Singapore: a multistate life table analysis” on Journal of Dentistry. Using nationally representative data from older adults in Singapore, this study found that impaired masticatory (chewing) function was associated with shorter total life expectancy and fewer years lived without disability. At age 60, those without chewing impairment lived nearly three more ADL-free years than those with impairment. Dental prostheses partially offset these losses but did not fully eliminate them. The findings highlight oral function as an important determinant of healthy ageing and support integrating oral health screening and rehabilitation into geriatric care.View Publication: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jdent.2026.106655
