Dr. Lusk is part of a team that has published “Triptan Initiation and Cerebrovascular Events in Patients With Migraine: A Nationwide Cohort Study” in Journal of the American Heart Association. In a retrospective cohort of 869,092 migraine patients, triptan initiation was associated with increased risks of cerebral ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and myocardial infarction. Using propensity score–weighted analyses, researchers found triptan users had more than double the hazard of ischemic stroke (HR 2.37), although the absolute annual risk increase was small (0.17%). Findings suggest a significant independent association between triptan use and subsequent vascular events.
