Expectations for Families to Care for Older Adults in the United States: Rapid Scoping Review 2011–2023
Dr. Wu is a part of the team that has recently published “ Expectations for Families to Care for Older Adults in the United States: Rapid Scoping Review 2011–2023” in Journal of Family Theory & Review. This review examined U.S. research published from 2011 to 2023 on expectations for family caregiving of older adults. Studies showed limited theoretical consistency, with familism from intergenerational solidarity theory most commonly used. Definitions and measures varied widely, often focusing broadly on family care or adult children. Future research should develop stronger theories and more nuanced measures reflecting caregiver roles, tasks, and care recipients’ health conditions.
