Dr. Garcia and Dr. Chiu, with colleagues, has recently published “A comparison of dementia-free life expectancy estimates across competing algorithmic classifications: new knowledge and considerations from the health and retirement study” in The Journals of Gerontology: Series B. Using Health and Retirement Study data, this study compared dementia-free life expectancy estimates based on four classification methods across race/ethnicity, nativity, and gender. Alternative algorithms generally produced estimates similar to the established Langa–Weir classification, although small differences emerged for some groups. The findings suggest that even modest methodological differences can affect assessments of dementia disparities and highlight the need for validated classifications.
