Long-term exposure to extreme temperature and high-impact chronic pain among middle-aged and older US adults
Dr. Sun, with colleagues, has recently published “Long-term exposure to extreme temperature and high-impact chronic pain among middle-aged and older US adults” in Environmental Research: Health. Using Health and Retirement Study data linked with census tract temperature records, this study examined how prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures affects high-impact chronic pain. Long-term extreme cold increased the likelihood of reporting chronic pain, with stronger effects among certain groups. Extreme heat had varied effects by wealth and rural-urban residence, highlighting socioeconomic differences and the need for climate-adaptive pain prevention strategies.
