Exposure to parental depression in childhood and memory trajectories in mid- and later life
Dr. Zhang, with colleagues, has published “Exposure to parental depression in childhood and memory trajectories in mid- and later life” in PLOS One. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, this study examined whether childhood exposure to parental depression affects memory trajectories in later life among Chinese adults aged 50 and older. Individuals who experienced depression in both parents during childhood showed lower baseline memory scores, and these disadvantages persisted over seven years. Educational attainment and adult health, especially depressive symptoms, partly explained the association. However, exposure to only one depressed parent was not linked to significantly different memory trajectories. The findings highlight lasting cognitive effects of parental mental health.
