Dr. Chen, with colleague, has recently published “ Evolving Landscapes, Shifting Narratives: Understanding Taiwanese News Media Portrayals of LGBTQ+ Populations from 2010 to 2021” in Journal of Homosexuality. This study examined Taiwanese newspaper portrayals of sexual minorities from 2010 to 2021, analyzing 18,558 articles from three major newspapers using web-scraped data, GPT-4-assisted classification, and time-series regression. Positive coverage increased overall, but differences in coverage frequency and sentiment between gay and lesbian subjects persisted. Major legal and social milestones only partially shifted portrayals toward neutrality and broader LGBTQ+ topics.
