Marriage Mandates: Understanding Parental Pressures to Marry Among Taiwanese Young Adults
Dr. Chen, with colleagues, has recently published “Marriage Mandates: Understanding Parental Pressures to Marry Among Taiwanese Young Adults” in Journal of Marriage and Family. This study examined parental pressure on adult children to marry using three waves of Taiwan Panel Study of Family Dynamics data from 585 families. Pressure remained prevalent and was associated with child characteristics, including sexual minority status. Divorced, separated, or remarried parents were less likely to pressure children, while younger mothers showed lower pressure. Cohort effects persisted despite cultural beliefs.
