Varied rather than similar: COVID-19 social policy responses for families and workers in East Asia
Dr. Wang, with colleagues, has recently published “Varied rather than similar: COVID-19 social policy responses for families and workers in East Asia” on Journal of Asian Public Policy. Using a model family approach across six East Asian societies, this study compared COVID-19 social policy responses for low-income families. Hong Kong implemented the most comprehensive reforms, Taiwan expanded generous but relatively low-value benefits, and Singapore prioritized broad coverage. Japan, South Korea, and Mainland China introduced fewer changes. The findings highlight substantial variation in welfare responses and provide insights for strengthening shock-responsive social protection systems.
